PAST

RICOH ART GALLERY is pleased to present Ontology, a solo exhibition by Yukimasa Ida.

Exploring diverse mediums ranging from painting to sculpture and prints, Ida has garnered critical acclaim for his conceptual meditations on the transience of existence, as embodied by the Japanese idiom “ichi-go, ichi-e.”

I n reference to the unrepeatable subtleties of each moment, the phrase suggests the nature of Ida’s work: as ontological snapshots of the fleeting present, as abstract stepping stones on the infinite path toward being and becoming.

Ontology marks Ida’s first solo exhibition held in Japan in nearly two years .

It is also his first solo show dedicated exclusively to experimentation over the intervening years with three print mediums: lithographs, silkscreens, and Ricoh’s proprietary 2.5-dimensional StareReap technology.

As a painter, Ida is known for his meticulous attention to texture, created through a complex layering of color, transparency, and opacity.

The present exhibition comprises 55 new works that represent the textural painter’s perspective on the unique planarity and layered quality of the printed medium.

StareReap captures the materiality of his richly impastoed paintings in 2.5 dimensions, which stand out on the gallery’s walls alongside the inherently “flatter” lithograph and silkscreen prints.

“New mediums make it possible to express different things. Paints and prints each have their own distinct materiality. This is something that has always interested me. Although lithographs and silkscreens are ‘flat’ mediums, they still have their own unique feel that can be used to express something different.”

Ida’s work has been exhibited widely. In 2017, he participated in the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation's fourth annual fundraising auction gala in St. Tropez. In 2018, he was selected by Forbes Japan as one of the nation’s most promising young creative talents in the 30 Under 30 list. Fresh off a collaboration with Dior, Ida is a rising star on the international contemporary art scene.

We hope you will join us at RICOH ART GALLERY for Ontology, a long-awaited solo exhibition and celebration of the “ichi-go, ichi-e” ethos from Yukimasa Ida spanning lithography, silkscreen, and StareReap printing in the heart of Ginza.
